Magnesium is one of the most important minerals in the human body, and is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady and bones strong. It is also involved in energy metabolism, protein and DNA synthesis.1
Without magnesium the body’s organs and tissues cannot function properly and a deficiency in this crucial mineral can affect virtually every organ system in the body. The DASH study (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) suggested that high blood pressure could be significantly lowered by a diet high in magnesium, potassium, and calcium.3 In another study, the incidence of high blood pressure was examined in over 30,000 U.S. male health professionals. It was found that a greater magnesium intake was significantly associated with a lower risk of hypertension.4 Low magnesium intake has also been linked to an increased incidence of Type 2 diabetes, as magnesium plays a crucial role in insulin regulation as well!5
Unfortunately many Canadians are not getting enough of this essential mineral. A recent study by Health Canada has shown that more than 34% of Canadians have a magnesium intake that is below the estimated average requirement.6 This means that more than one third of Canadians have insufficient magnesium levels, and are at risk for various health problems associated with low magnesium levels.
