Book excerpt - Chapter 2 page 15

It is surprising how many people have never heard of the adrenal glands, considering they command the most powerful hormones which affect virtually every system in the body. The adrenal glands are no bigger than a walnut and sit on top of each kidney. You cannot live without your adrenal glands and their hormones. How well your adrenal glands function greatly influences your quality of life and vitality.

The hormones secreted by your adrenal glands influence all major physiological processes in the body: utilization of carbohydrates, fats and proteins; regulation of blood sugar; functionng of the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, immune and nervous systems; inflammation and allergic reactions; hormonal health and more.
Each Adrenal gland consists of two parts - the cortex and medula. The adrenal cortex secretes a variety of steroid hormones: glucocorticoids (cortisol), mineralocorticoids (aldosterone) and androgens (testosterone).
