Does Coconut Oil Make You Fat?

This is a common question we get from many of our customers and the answer for the most part is NO! I say no with a little bit of hesitation because I am a firm believer that too much of anything is never a good idea. In moderation this 'healthy fat' can offer numerous health benefits and is a household staple!

First of all, yes Coconut Oil is a saturated fat. This scares a lot of people off because we are told to stay away from saturated fat; it can raise our cholesterol, clog our arteries and increase our waistline. Research shows that not all saturated fat is the same. Coconut Oil is high in a saturated fat called MCT’s (medium chain triglycerides), whereas most of the other fatty acids in our diet are long chain triglycerides. MCT’s are metabolized differently in the body, they do not get stored as fat and get used right away as energy. The good news is Coconut Oil can potentially help you lose weight! Not only can this oil help suppress your appetite, it can also help you burn fat. Research is also showing a positive effect in Alzheimer’s patients boosting brain function plus it has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties….the list goes on and on! Coconut Oil topically is a great natural makeup remover, hair and skin moisturiser, and wonderful ingredient to use in homemade deodorants and toothpastes.

Not all coconut oils are the same so here are a few key words to look for when purchasing coconut oil:

  1. Virgin or Un-Refined: This usually means the oil is in a more natural state and pressed without the addition of chemicals.

  2. Cold Pressed or Direct Micro Expelled: Cold pressed means the oil is pressed in temperature controlled environment so quality of the oil is not degraded. Direct Micro Expelled means the coconut oil is pressed right on the growing sight making the finish product an extremely fresh, high quality raw coconut oil.

  3. Organic: Staying away from pesticides is always a better choice. The less we can expose ourselves to these harmful contaminants the better.

  4. Glass Bottle versus Plastic: Glass is always a safer option as some plastic bottles can contain BPA a known hormone disrupter.

  5. Fair Trade: Choose socially responsible products whenever possible. Let’s support companies that care about the people that create their goods.

A few of our favourite brands are:

Alpha: DME Virgin Coconut Oil

Dr. Bronner's: Organic Virgin Coconut Oil

Now Foods: Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
